My Favorite Snacks

1. I love to make up a plate of sliced apples with some mild cheddar or monterey jack cut into small chunks. I add wheat thins, and there you have it....sweet,protein and crunch.

2. Between meals if I get hungry, I'll carry a string cheese, an apple and a small baggie with a handful of walnuts. It kills the hungries.

3. A spoonful of peanut butter.

4. Frozen grapes.

5. Popcorn

6. Handful of almonds.

7. Multigrain pretzels.

8. Jello

9. Trail mix of banana chips, pretzel sticks, walnuts, cranberry-raisins and granola.

10. Hot tea with a nice piece of dark chocolate or dark chocolate covered almonds.

The Tough Times

Hello my dialysis friends,

I have a confession to make. I just don't feel like going to dialysis anymore. Yep, you heard me, I don't wanna go. What a drag. I guess I am in a rut. You know the kind, where you feel like.....crap. I've had alot of drama lately, work has been tough, summer is over and I never even enjoyed it. Cold, dark, lonely winter is fast approaching.

It is very easy to be happy and brave when everything is going good. The tough times show us what we are really made of. If we fold when the hard times fall, what does that say about us?

What I have to do, is dig down deep, find my center,my faith, and decide if I still have a fight in me. We can't be quitters when things are down. Depression is a battle.
It seeks to destroy lives.

There is a hero living inside of you, that will fight the good fight....let's show everybody what we are made of. Love,Jodi

Movie Time

Hello all my friends,

Being on dialysis means trying to occupy yourself with other things, since many hours are spent at the machine or other related medical activities. I always enjoy loosing myself in a good book or a blockbuster of a movie. Unfortunately, Hollywood has let us down.Anyone with $20,000 in their pocket can make a movie, that will actually end up in your local theater. Worthy of the price of admission? I think not. There are some sleepers out there, and I will try to clue you in.

I just saw Burn After Reading. Brad Pitt. John Malkovich. The lady from Fargo, that is from Pittsburgh.
Dark,strange,dramedy,(dramatic-comedy).Loved it.Second time around is even better.
I say watch it twice. The casting is really good. I rate it 2 happy meals and an apple pie. See you at the movies.......Jodi

I'm pissed

Hello
I must say what's on my mind. I get sicker and sicker of seeing 95+ people starting dialysis. It breaks my heart to hear these poor elderly folks crying," why am I here or what are you doing to me or where am I?" What is wrong with the families of these people. Do they really want them to suffer, to keep them here? I don't know. In order to let the families off the hook, these greedy Doctors need to let go too, but they can't.....they are blinded by dollar signs.

By the time we live to be 90 something years old, I would pretty much bet things are gonna slow down or stop working....wouldn't you?

These poor old people,These selfish families,These money grubbin doctors....nobody wins. The Doctors are laughin all the way to the bank, but their also going to have to answer to God. It takes a real heartless person to put someone through this for financial gain. It pisses me off and makes me sick.

It will never happen to me because when I say I've had enough......I'm done..... and the Doctors can eat dirt!

You are what you eat

Hello my dialysis friends. I hope the summer is working well for you. I hope you are safely enjoying all the wonderful festival, fair, picnic, and summer foods.

Remember when you are a dialysis patient "you are what you eat". I see people everyday who come in for their treatments who have overdrank and overate. Next thing I know, they are puking up their guts and cramping. Miserable, miserable, miserable. They do it over and over again. One time for me is all I need.

Sure, I love food and I love to eat, but come on people get real. Eat until you are 80% full and stop. Don't drink too much. I know it's hard but you can do it. If you are a beer drinker, I suggest you get on the wagon completely. You cannot be a dialysis patient and drink beer. You will be dead in a year. Stop smoking too.

Clean all the junk out of your body. Sugar, smoke, alcohol, unnecessary pills, processed foods, fast food, and caffeine. Fill up on nutrient rich food and drink water. Eat food God made. You'll sleep better, poop better and live longer.

Luv Ya, Jodi

Arm Update

Hello my dialysis friends,

I had to go and have my arm checked. They ran the dye in and low and behold the doctor said it was anatomically perfect. He could see nothing wrong with it. I was so happy.

The design of my arm makes a sharp hairpin turn under my left armpit. I have a gortex graft. I think the faster bloodflow on the machine makes me have a little discomfort.

I had the girls slow me down from a 350 bloodflow to 300. It really seems to help. I'm sure many of you run at a 500 or more, but I've always went for a kinder, gentler treatment. You know I have been doing this a long time, so this is the secret to my longevity. I also do not do reuse. It's not for me.

Things went well, but I did have a reaction to the dye. I am allergic to many things, this being one of them. Next time I will have to take some steroids and benedril.

Take care of that access. It is the most vital aspect of dialysis. Don't mess around, I mean it! If you wanna live you'll listen to me. Dialysis is bitter sweet.
I'm married to it. Life without parole. The ole ball and chain. I never leave home without it. A blessing and a curse. Can't live with it, can't live without it. The best thing that has ever happened to me,because....I get to live....a little longer.

Show Some Love

If we have love for one another, God and all will know we are one of his.

1. Let someone go ahead of you in line.

2. Find something good in everyone you meet.

3. Smile at strangers, say hello or wave.

4. Validate everyone by calling them by their name.

5. Compliment people on a job well done or if you see something you like.

6. Be grateful to all those who serve you.

7. Always talk nice about everyone.

8. Listen to others....really listen.

9. Check on people who aren't doing well.

10. Pray specific prayers for those in need everyday.

These are just 10 simple things you can do to show love to others. Start a list of your own. I'm sure there are many, many more. Remember God gives us a beautiful sunrise every morning. I think he's trying to say, "LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE"
Have a great 4th of July, Love,love,love....Jodi.......Hi Mike,Unk,Linda,Denny,Tami

High School Reunion

Yes! It was my 30 year high school reunion. Amazing. What a time was had by all. Hi Denny!

We don't look so old yet. Maureen has a really fun photo album on snapfish. It is so cool. I laughed like crazy. I'm sorry not everyone came. It was a bit pricey for us poor folk. $45.00 and open bar. Sadly,I don't drink.

We should of invited a teacher or two. Earl impressed me. He's cool beans. Bob Burkes is starting to look just like his dad. Heather Armstrong looked great. Buzzy wasn't feeling any pain. Pat Angiolelli is the Mafia's bodyguard. The twinny's were twinzy as usual.

Mrs.Willet cooked the food in her skillet. We really are great and we really are still fine. We are the class of '79.

Love you guys,Jodi

It's The Climb

Hello my friends. I heard a great song today that had really good words.

There is always gonna be a mountain, you're gonna wanna move. It doesn't matter what's on the other side. What matters is...the climb.

We must keep climbing, keep pushing, and keeping the faith.

Arm Updates

Hello my dialysis friends and other loved ones. We all have to deal with our grafts, fistulas and catheters which enable us to be hooked to the machine. We have to have them, there is no other way. Mine is giving me trouble and I must go in to have it looked at. They will do the balloon and pop it open. I have a narrow spot at the top that likes to collapse sometimes. I can still have my treatment, but it is very uncomfortable during the run. It aches really bad sorta like a toothache. Next Friday I have an appointment to take care of my arm. To get through this coming week they will stay on one side of my graft and avoid the sore side.

We are lucky they can do this stuff now. It wasn't that easy in the past, believe me.If you want to see some crazy stuff type in the word dialysis and go on a museum tour of the first dialysis machines.Amazing. we've come a long, long way baby.Thank God for the pioneers that have brought us where we are today. What smart people they were. Good for them and us.

I will keep you posted on my arm. In the meantime take care of yours and have a great weekend. Listen to your heart, it's always right.

a hundred hugs and a thousand kisses, Jodi

Dialysis and exercise

Hello my friends,

As you know I have been a dialysis patient for a very long time. I stopped counting. Anyhoo, the message I want to share with you today is about exercise. I have never been Miss Buff. I've got "padding" in places. I will never wear a bikini...as long as I live.Whatever.

What I try to do everyday is exercise. Not a lot....but a little, believe me, goes a long way. It is The Fountain of Youth.

Stretch everyday for 5 minutes every morning and night. Do a brisk walk daily for at least 20 minutes. Use hand weights 3 times a week to work those muscles. Do other things for fun. Ride a bike, play badmitten, croquet, horseshoes or frisbee. Swimming is a great sport, as well as tennis. Go slowly and do it at your own pace.

I believe in the Curves program and all fitness gyms. Sign up today. You only stand to benefit from them.

Believe me I know how easy it is to want to plop down on the sofa and stay there forever, especially after a treatment. That is not the way to go. Get moving and do a little at a time. Over time you will get stronger and stronger. Your doctors will be amazed and so will you.

Your body was designed to stand upright and propel forward. Just do it. I know you can do it.

Always remember that I love love love....YOU!

Family

Hello my friends,

They say that blood is thicker than water and the older I get the more I believe that statement. I just spent this past weekend with family, and it was great. Even though we are all very different, there is an invisible bond that connects us, and it is made of 100% love.

My Ohio cousins are all so cool. Hi everybody. Hey Ian and Riley!!! My aunts and uncles are still so so funny. Uncle Jimmy is too much. He always tells me he loves me and I say, "no you don't." This cracks him up.

There is nothing like family. Kin is a good thing to have. Keep them close. You never know when you may need a place to lay your head, a few bucks, or a kidney.

A hundred hugs, and a thousand kisses, Jodi

smell the flowers

Let me share a touching story with you. A few years ago, my friends, I was having some blood problems. My white cell count was unusually high without explanation. The doctor thought it would be a good idea to have a bone marrow test. I had to go to Pittsburgh to a very nice Cancer clinic. Everybody was top shelf. I was the only one in the waiting room who had hair. All the patients that were there were so brave and beautiful. All of them wore big, happy smiles on their faces. The gals had colorful scarves on their heads. The fellas had on ball caps or nothing at all. Everybody talked and laughed. It was a pleasant and peaceful place, and I will never forget it.

Because I was having trouble finding my way around Pittsburgh a really nice and very cute guy who was a Cancer patient helped me with directions. He was so nice.I think about him alot. He was completely bald, and very sexy.

They took us back to our exam rooms at the same time so I knew he was next door to me. It is so easy to hear through those walls. His doctor came in and I knew it wasn't a good report. The doctor was short on words. My new friend was brave and he really wanted to make it easy for the doctor I think. He said,"just give it to me straight Doc, I really need to know what I got." There was a long pause. A really long pause, and then I heard the doctor softly say to my buddy, "all I can say at this point is....take time to smell the flowers."

I have to sign out now because at this point in the story I loose it.Take time to smell the flowers. Love you, Jodi

My Business Partner

Hello My Friends
I hope this beautiful Monday morning finds you refreshed and ready to go for another week. They say life is short. Like smoke through a keyhole. Is it really? Life is long for those who struggle. Life is long for those who are sick or depressed. Life is long for those who worry and are afraid. My friends, I have good news for you.

Tears endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. There is a big mighty God that lives inside of each and every one of us. I need to tell you that you are not alone, and your Father God is bragging about you. You are the favorite son, the apple of his eye, Cinderella. He thinks you hung the moon, even when he knows he did it!

My friends, listen to me. God our mighty Father and creator knitted you together in you mother's womb, he counted the hairs on you head, and he carved your name in the palm of his almighty hand. He is Lord of Lord and King of Kings, and he is your Father. You are a child of the most high God. You are royalty.

Courage is fear that has said it's prayers. The Lord is my shepherd, and my business partner. I don't meet with anyone until I meet with God first. Healing comes in many forms my friends. When Jesus shed his blood for us, he placed us in the palm of his sweet and gentle hand. God our Father put his almighty hand over the top and sealed us inside this mighty unbreakable protective pod...forever to carry us...to never leave us or drop us...always in his hand and in his heart...a love that is boundless and cannot be broken.

May the peace of the Lord be with always, your friend, Jodi

Careful Eating For The Summer

Hello my dialysis friends. Of course you Know that June is the official start of summer. Garden tomatoes, fresh homegrown corn, melons, berries picked right off the bush, rhubarb pie, homemade ice cream, french fries from the fair drenched in salt and vinegar, icy slush balls or slush puppies, pig roasts with lots of ice cold beer and baked barbecued beans. There are so many things to enjoy in the summertime with all the outdoor fun and the foods that go with that.

It is still okay to enjoy all of these wonderful things. That is what life is all about. However, everything in moderation. In other words, DON'T MAKE A PIG OF YOURSELF. It is okay to have a hotdog at a cookout. Be mindful of what you are eating and be wary of portion sizes and take into account all the things you will be eating that day. Make adjustments where necessary. Not just diabetics and dialysis patients have to watch what they eat, EVERYBODY has to watch what they eat. YOU are not alone.

Small tastes of things can be very satisfying. Many times I have taken a small bite and realized I didn't even like it or want it. Making a plate of your favorites in small portions, adding a nonsugary drink-unsweetened iced tea is my favorite. Sugary drinks will make you thirstier and thirstier. Then enjoy a nice dessert. A piece of cake, slice of watermelon or maybe some jello salad or peach cobbler. There are so many ways to still have a great time and feel great.

Don't forget to play some horseshoes or frisbee. Take a little walk or go swimming. Wear your sunscreen or a nice big brimmed hat. Play with the dog and have a ball. Love and enjoy your family and friends. Tell some old funny jokes or stories that everybody will be sure to laugh at. These are the days of summer my friend.I love nothing more than sitting outside on a warm humid night on a swing with a glass of lemonade or iced tea...sipping....swinging....and starring at the beautiful stars our mighty God was good enough to place there for our pleasure.

Enjoy this fine month of June. Be careful eat well and healthy. Live big. Love alot.
And always know, I love you. Your friend, Jodi

Blowing In The Wind

How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take
'Till he knows that too many people have died?
The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Happy Birthday Dr.Bacani

Dear Dialysis Friends,

I hope all is well. Access working good? Take care of that "sucker", it is your lifeline. Been going to all of your treatments? Are you cutting any of them short? Read the blog I did about that. Have you been eating your phosphate binders with all of your meals? If you don't, your bones will become brittle, you will get severe itching and damage to your heart and other vital organs.Stop messin around. Take them and all your meds. Get good rest, exercise and eat well.Diabetics.....Wow you guys. Watch that sugar. Be careful. You got a tough job, but I know you can do it.
I know how very trying your situation is. Don't focus on your medical problems AT All. Do something else, think about something else. If you don't do what I say, everyone around you will be sick too. Is that what you want? I didn't think so. You're so sweet and special. God loves you so much. Read Romans Chapter 8.
I want to wish a great man a very happy birthday. Without him I don't think my life would have turned out this great. Love You Dr.B

Have a great one,
Jodi

A Job Well Done

I found a quote that describes my job at Curves exactly the way I feel. It goes like this.

Experiencing the silent satisfaction of a job well done. Fulfilling high expectations for customers. Sharing and celebrating team victories. Making the most of our time together and anticipating an even brighter future. Knowing in our hearts that even our most routine tasks make a meaningful contribution to our company vision, and therefore the world- this makes the difference between eight hours of ' have to' and eight hours of 'want to.' This makes work fun.
-LensCrafters

Congratulations to RANDY MACRI for his new Kidney transplant. He waited a long time. If you are waiting .....don't ever give up. It will come.

Inventer Dies

Willem Kolff inventer of the artificial kidney which evolved into the dialysis machine has died at the age of 97.

He was true genius and because of him I have been able to live.

Dr. Kolff was a Dutch -born. He was responsible for many other medical devices that saves lives including the Jarvik-7 artificial heart.

Dr.Kolff created the first kidney machine from laundry tubs, a wooden drum, semipermeable sausage casing, and an electric motor. We've come a long way. Things change daily.

Today more than 200,000 people are having dialysis because of the good Doctor.

He worked at the Cleveland Clinic for a time after he immigrated to the U.S. in 1950.

Dr. Kolff 's first patients only lived a few days on the machine, but in 1945 the artificial kidney allowed a woman to live for 7 more years.

Here I am 27 years and going strong. All my thanks to Dr. Kolff.

A hundred hugs and a thousand kisses,
Jodi

Are You Shortening Your Dialysis Time?

Dialysis treatments replace less than 15% of the normal 100% of kidney function. Cutting them short is a very bad idea. If you don't receive enough of your blood cleansing treatment, it will retain too much of the body's waste products that cause uremia and will make you feel sick.

UNDERDIALYZED SYMPTOMS

* weak and tired all the time
* loss of real weight
* poor appetite
* nausea
* taste of ammonia in your mouth
* yellow skin color
* uremic pericarditis (inflammation of the heart)
* higher risk of infection and prolonged bleeding

WELL DIALYZED PEOPLE

* feel pretty good
* eat and enjoy their meals
* have normal weight
* have good skin color
* feels good on treatment day
* sleeps well

THE RIGHT DIALYSIS DOSE OF TREATMENT

* a large enough dialyzer
* a high enough blood flow
* a well functioning vascular access
* enough time on the machine

Take care of your body and it will last a lifetime. Love,Love,Love You friend, Jodi
Hi to Linda my old dialysis cronie.

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

I rarely get colds and I think it is because I have a tried and true method for taking care of them. This is my COLD CURE.

1. As soon as symptoms develop, drink a small glass of orange juice.

2.Have a piece of toast and begin taking 2 extra strength Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours.

3. Go directly to bed with a heating pad set on medium.

4. Rub your chest with Vick's vapo rub.

5. Suck on Hall Mentho Liptus drops, about 1 every 3 hours.

6. Eat hot chicken noodle soup for the rest of the day.

7. Sip on ginger ale in the afternoon.

8. Start your day and end your day with a steaming cup of hot tea. Add lemon and honey.

9.Absolutely stay indoors and maintain a constant body temperature.

I know my remedy sounds a bit old fashioned, but it works for me every time. The key to success is staying indoors, keeping warm and getting plenty of rest. In 2 days time you should be well on your way to good health. If however you develop vomiting or diahhrea accompanied by a fever, call your Doctor. You may need an antibiotic.

Stay well, hi to Mike, Linda, Unk, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my gorgeous nephew Not so little any more Donnie, Love love love you all Jodi

Guess What?

Hello to all my friends out there who stayed with me since November. My dear friend who does my blogging for me was having some personal problems, but the blog will be posted regularly from now on I promise.

GUESS WHAT? I am now a business woman. I bought a CURVES franchise from my boss and now I am the boss. That is also why I have been so busy. Curves is the greatest thing to happen to me. It improved my quality of life in so many ways. I have never been happier.

Many people tried to poo-poo my dream. Many people tried to make me feel like I could not do this because weeellll there are always many many many reasons why you shouldn't do something. There will always be someone who will try to steal your joy and squash you. The cemetary is full of dreams that never happened. Don't let that be you. No matter what your situation is........ If you have an idea, a wish, a hope for something else.....birth it! Believe me, it will be laborous, but it is the most satisfying pain you will ever go through.

I know times are tough. Shut off the news and make your move. Now is the time for action. Dialysis patients have alot of time on our hands. Use it wisely and productively. YOU are still an influence on this Earth. GOD has a plan for YOU.

I love you all. Thanks for staying around. A hundred hugs and a thousand kisses,
Your friend, Jodi

P.S. Hello to my Unk who believes in me and made me an influence in this crazy world.
